In early November, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) started a helicopter roundup of wild horses in Nevada’s Triple B Complex which covers the Triple B, Maverick Medicine and Antelope Valley Herd Management Areas (HMAs).
The BLM hired a private company to cut the horses’ population from over 3,300 to a range of 472 to 889, almost an 86% reduction!
Over the month-long roundup, the American Wild Horse Coalition’s observers documented wild horses suffering from excessive roping, chases occurring in very cold weather and foals left behind.
The roundup caused 27 deaths of horses which included bone fractures, poor body conditions, blindness, and physical deformities.
Per a U.S. Forest Service Report*, the final totals were:
- Captured: 2,196 (804 Stallions, 881 Mares, and 511 Foals)*
Shipped: 2,131 (778 Stallions, 842 Mares, and 511 Foals)
Treated with Fertility Control (GonaCon): 23 Mares
Released: 39 (16 Stallions, 23 Mares and no foals)
Per a BLM report: 27 Deaths:
- 10 due to “poor body condition.”
