Shelby was rescued from the slaughter pipeline in October 2024. Used up and cast off by an uncaring owner, her future was grim until we intervened.

Initial observations indicated founder in the front feet. Veterinary exam revealed Shelby was very stiff-legged in her front end at the walk. She had difficulty turning to both left and right on a driveway area.

Her front hooves were described as flat with low and under-run heels to where the sensitive heel bulb area could be touching the ground directly. Hoof walls were described as severely flared dorsally, medially and laterally. There was no evidence of recent trimming, shoeing or corrections.

X-ray views of the left front hoof showed minimal sole thickness between the broken back pedal bone and palmar aspect of the sole. Due to poor hoof care, Shelby showed damage to the pedal bone including fracture which was resulting in part to her chronic lameness.

Other issues in the hind end could be attributed to long-term front end lameness.
