Wild Horse Roundup Updates

Over 62,000 wild horses and burros have been permanently removed from taxpayer funded public lands which have been allocated to them by law. It is estimated that just over 70,000 remain free across ten Western states. Photo credit: Meg Frederick Photography

Over a 4 month period, the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM’s) helicopter roundups have caused stress, suffering, injuries and more than 90 deaths to wild horse and burro populations.

A recent roundup of Colorado’s Little Book Cliffs Herd Management Area (HMA) aimed to cut the herd size by about 57%. Their goal was based on an unscientific appropriate management level (AML) of 90-150 horses.

Based on reports, results show that 140 horses were captured and removed. This number included 21 foals.

The roundup also resulted in 3 unnecessary deaths.

Summer roundups are estimated to cost American taxpayers as much as $154 million.

More than 10,000 wild horses on taxpayer funded public lands in California, Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Colorado and Wyoming have endured brutal summer roundups resulting in a loss of freedom, suffering injury, trauma and even death.

Humane alternatives exist. It does NOT have to be this way.
