Sullivan
Sullivan was rescued in July 2026 after his owner “traded” him to a known kill buyer/dealer in order to get another horse. Heartless POC is a polite way to say what we think!
Information from Sullivan’s veterinary exam and evaluation included:
“Sullivan is a roaned black Arabian gelding approximately 33 years of age with a BCS of 3/9, skinny with bilaterally symmetrical muscle atrophy over the top line. He has a visibly lumpy lateral left carpus that palpates abnormally with a mixture of soft tissue and firm swelling.
There is a deep, thick medial heel bulb scar in the left hind leg and the right front hoof has a coronary scar with corresponding hoof wall defect. Sullivan has enlarged deep hock sores bilaterally.
His mouth palpates mostly toothless or irregularly irregular cheek teeth presence and absence. There is a severe 1″ incisor wave which may render normal chewing impossible and painful.
Sullivan trots relatively sound with a swing in his suspension, but when stopped after a short trot, he is unable to fully extend both carpi (knees), wobbling in slight flexion in both thoracic limbs. This is likely due to pain and/or instability.”
Xrays were taken with DV and lateral views with results showing:
“The DV view shows abnormal bone in the distal lateral aspect of the radius bone which
corresponds to palpable swelling and effusion. There may be a dissecting but non-displaced bone fragment in the articular most distal portion of this abnormal region.
Several more views would be needed, in obliqued and tangential planes to further characterize this possible fractured or disunited portion of bone. The remainder of the carpal joints show mild osteoarthritic (OA) changes consistent wear-and-tear of the joints.”
Sullivan spent time with his friend (Sherwood) until quality of life issues required humane euthanasia.
It is a disgrace to see any horse, let alone senior horses, tossed aside like disposal trash.
