Sherwood
Sherwood was rescued in July 2026 to remove him from further neglect and responsible care for an elderly horse.
From the veterinary exam and evaluation:
Sherwood is a 30+ year old black paint gelding with a body condition score (BCS) 2.5 out of 9, and profuse scarring over all four cannon/pastern regions. His left forelimb hoof is severely overgrown and broken on midline.
He has a freeze brand on his left hip and the lower hock bears a deep chronic scar. There is a 2 inch by 1 inch large elevated fixed scar lateral to the left-side 10th rib with a small ulceration on the most lateral part.
Sherwood’s mouth palpates irregularly, indicating advanced age, lack of dental maintenance, and possibly several teeth absent in the cheek teeth arcades.
Xrays were taken and results showed:
There is a mild to moderate medial malleolus lesion (MM) of the tarsocrural joint, with severe osteoarthritic (OA) changes to the distal intertarsal joint (DIT), with significant loss of articular cartilage with possible fusion.
Sherwood spent time in the rescue with a new friend (another elderly gelding) until it was time for them to cross the Rainbow Bridge due to quality of life issues.
