Sarabi
Sarabi was rescued in July 2025 to keep her out of the slaughter pipeline. She and her 2 year old colt (also saved) had been dumped at an auction and were in danger of ending up in a more frightening situation than already experienced.
Part of Sarabi’s initial veterinary exam included a pregnancy check to ensure she had not again been bred, whether prior to being at an auction or after where she was kept in a pen that included 1 or 2 stallions.
Results of the test showed Sarabi was not pregnant.
Her body condition score (BCS) was noted at 3.5 out of 5. It had been indicated that Sarabi had gained some weight once purchased from an auction, but whether that is true or not is unknown.
Sarabi will be watched carefully and kept in quarantine as she was exposed to strangles (her colt “Simba” was already showing signs when the pair were rescued).
Sarabi will have further follow up with the vet for updating basic care needs. She received some simple handling evaluations, part of which allowed for a farrier trim a couple of weeks after her arrival (initially she was uncertain about picking up her feet).
Update (August 2025): Sarabi is out of quarantine and making new friends with Lilla and Red, two of our retired horses. Sarabi had a bath which she enjoyed and is happy to have lots of attention. She is doing much better at being able to pick up her feet for farrier care.
She is scheduled for veterinary follow up and dental care in October. Sarabi will also have a new winter blanket and will be given training on “how to wear a blanket stress-free” as it’s likely she has never worn one.
Update (October 2025): Sarabi is doing very well and has been retired with the rescue to be part of the sanctuary herd.
UPDATE (2026): Sarabi continues to enjoy her retirement with other rescue horses Lilla and Red as well as her son (Simba) who is turning 3 this year. Late in 2005, our vet diagnosed Sarabi with Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Disease (DSLD) and we’ve been monitoring its progression every few months.
