Olivia
Sweet Olivia was dumped at an auction where she ended up in the wrong hands, heading for the slaughter pipeline. She was rescued at the end of March 2024 with an indication she had cancer.
Veterinary exam confirmed what we had noted: multiple to coalescing melanoma prominent in the perineurium and completely around the anus. Her tail and hind end were stained with diarrhea. More melanomas were found in other locations, but the cancer was predominant in the hind end (photos are in our records).
It was very likely there were infiltrative melanoma in her GI tract due to the fact melanoma can invade all skin spaces, especially the skin which lines the gut. This leads to malabsorptive disorders, GI hypermotility, diarrhea, weight loss and colic.
UPDATE: Once it was determined that Olivia’s medical issues could not be managed for a humane quality of life, she was humanely put down.
