Maguire
Maguire was rescued from entering the slaughter pipeline during July 2026.
Notes from his veterinary exam and evaluation included the following:
Maguire is a liver grade gelding, approximately 23 years of age with bilateral carpal (knee) enlargements. Both carpi palpate firmly with bony enlargements on the dorsomedial aspects.
Both carpal flexions reveal severe range of motion (ROM) loss in both carpi , approximately 70% reduced, with R>>L. There are bilateral heel bulb scars that penetrate the coronet bands on the right sides of both forefeet, with corresponding deeply scarred hoof walls.
The right eye has a medium depth penetration lateral corneal ulceration with mild chemosis and mild halo, penetrating into the sclera, visible without fluorescein staining. There is a prominent ring on the hoof walls of all four feet, at about 60-90 days’ growth.
Bilateral carpal radiographs showed changes in the left carpus are more global and severe than the right. The left lateral view demonstrates poor anatomical alignment of the carpal bones and the carpus, with misshapen and reactive proliferative changes in all three joints, markedly in the caudal articulatory region with near-bridging spondylitis caudally and medially. There is loss of articular cartilage and osteolytic bone in the middle carpal joint, with possible fusion. The right carpus is markedly less affected, however soft tissue effusion and arthritic changes at the margins of all joints exists.
Based on the findings from the veterinary evaluation and diagnostics, Maguire was humanely euthanized due to the extent of damage to multiple weight bearing and motion responsible structures.
As always, it is tragic that another good horse was left to be broken down and suffering, then cast aside to wring out the last dollars from him, without regard for the predicament he was rescued from.
