Eliza was saved from the slaughter pipeline in October 2024. She had been dumped at an auction, extremely lame and had recently had a foal pulled from her (whether at auction or just prior we will never know).

It was clear Eliza was in a lot of pain and she was given Bute prior to the veterinary exam set for the following morning, post rescue.

The initial evaluation indicated: Eliza is 4 out of 5 lame on the left foreleg, She has severe scars on both fore pasterns, and a club-like left foreleg with the most severe scarring.

Xrays of the left fore showed that the abundant, bunched scarring was causing some degree of pain due to its location directly over the medial and lateral neurovascular bundles.

And if those old, significant injuries were not enough, poor Eliza had been exposed to and was sick with “strangles” (Strep equi) and already had a sensitive and enlarged guttural pouch on the left, a palpably enlarged larynx causing some breathing difficulty, and mucous discharge from both nostrils.

Due to her severe lameness issues which could not be treated for any improvement of function and especially pain relief, Eliza was humanely euthanized.
