Horse Slaughter Update (2025 numbers)

For over a decade, there has been a significant decline in the number of America’s horses being shipped to slaughter.

America’s horses are not raised or regulated as a food animal. Over the course of their lives, they are given or exposed to banned substances for use in food animals, which makes their “meat” dangerous if not deadly for human consumption. These substances are found in ordinary caretaking products such as wormer, fly spray, antibiotics, vaccines, Bute, Banamine, other ingested or topically applied items.
