Zoya
Zoya is a crippled older mare who was dumped at a low end auction and then in danger of entering the slaughter pipeline. She was rescued in April 2026.
Zoya was very lame and sore with an enlarged left front fetlock joint and overall lameness from other strains, injury and compensation.
Initial veterinary exam included Xrays and other evaluations.
There are severe medial dorsal changes to the fetlock joint and surrounding tissues.
There is a radiolucent cystic structure on the medial aspect seen on DP view that may indicate a penetrating wound or traumatic blunt force event. There is narrowing of joint space on the medial aspect of the joint, chronic sclerosis, impressive remodeling of the joint in the proximal long pastern and distal metacarpal bone. Changes seen are consistent with longstanding proliferative and resorptive changes and could even have occurred from a septic joint. However, this is not diagnostically confirmable.
Zoya’s body condition score (BCS) is 3 out of 9. Left fore fetlock has large medial dorsal hard enlargement. She is 4 out of 5 lame. Her right shoulder has hard bony enlargement and severe muscular atrophy and hypertrophy. Muscular and bony changes in left fetlock and right shoulder and scapular region indicate chronic long-term changes and compensatory mechanisms in the right thoracic limb to help stabilize when in motion and at a standstill. Range of motion in left fetlock minimal.
Zoya is profoundly lame due to traumas and/or injuries leaving her in significant pain.
Again, another good horse ruined by humans.
