Nina
Nina was rescued in July 2026 after an owner left her to an uncertain fate.
Her initial veterinary exam and evaluation provided the following details:
Nina is a dark bay 5 year old QH with a left hip brand. Her body condition score (BCS) is 5/9 and she has a nice, glossy coat with a low hair whorl on her frontal facial sinus region.
Nina’s left fore pastern has a deep circumferential scar and she is 4/5 lame on this limb, resting it cranially when standing. The scarred region palpates mildly painful, especially at the location of the medial and lateral underlying neurovascular bundles. The fetlock joint flexes with a 25% decrease in range of motion (ROM).
To further explore this past significant injury, Xrays were taken.
The DP and lateral views of the left fore pastern and fetlock region showed that the circumferential scarring of the pastern can be seen in the caudal aspect of P1 in the lateral view and both medial and lateral aspects of the DP view.
There is proliferative bone mid-pastern on all aspects in both views, indicating irritation of the periosteum and possibly both pastern and fetlock joint capsules (origin and insertional portions, respectively).
Both sesamoid bones have lytic and proliferative changes which likely caused pain during suspensory stretch and left forelimb stance phase of ambulation. This level of bony change may have occurred secondarily to a suspensory apparatus infection, with bacteria migrating proximally up the ligaments to cause infection of the bone.
Nina was humanely euthanized for untreatable damage to the left forelimb from a past injury which should have received proper and ongoing treatment at the time of the trauma. And if this result had been the same over time, the owner should have done the responsible thing and not dumped Nina into the hands of a trader/kill buyer.
