Lenny
Lenny was rescued in April 2026 to prevent him from entering the slaughter pipeline. He’s an elderly roan gelding most likely having been a ranch horse.
Lenny has Cushings, lameness issues and areas with significant arthritis. His teeth are very worn and lacking in proper dental care.
Lenny is a 30+ year old QH-style red roan gelding with a body condition score (BCS) 4/9 and a pot-bellied appearance with a long, shaggy retained winter coat that is firmly attached throughout in patches.
His left eye has a longitudinal ragged opacity in the cornea and the right jugular vein is scarred down mid-cervical region, rendering the right jugular non-patent. Lenny’s joints creak and pop (crepitus) as he walks, originating mostly from the knees (carpi) and fetlocks.
Lenny presents as an older Cushingnoid gelding with classical old age paired with a retained, overly long and wispy hair coat, which can be the sentinel and most obvious sign of equine PPID. This disease is confirmed with an endogenous ACTH test, and if hormone levels are higher than normal, treatment consists of Pergolide prescription medication, given orally daily.
PPID horses can have an aged, dumpy appearance, and are prone to abscesses, poor healing potential, and can have weight disturbances on both sides of the spectrum. If left untreated, excessive ACTH can cause systemic stress and liver damage due to chronic stimulation of high levels of circulating cortisol. It is highly likely that Lenny was in end-stage liver disease based on several identifying factors as seen in other past rescue horses over the years. Along with other incurable, degenerative health issues, and his advanced age Lenny was humanely euthanized.
