Declan
Declan was rescued from entering the slaughter pipeline in July 2025. He is an older chestnut American Saddlebred gelding, lame and very thin.
Declan’s veterinary exam showed his age to be around 20 years old and his body condition score (BCS) at 3 out of 9 (very thin) and lean.
Veterinary exam also noted Declan having several healed wounds, the most notable of which is a left lateral hind longitudinal scar about 6″ in length over the suspensory ligament and deep digital flexor tendon. He has visually enlarged carpi with bilaterally reduced range of motion (ROM), greater on the right than left. He tested 2/5 lameness at a trot on the right front leg.
Declan will undergo further evaluation to determine quality of life issues.
Upon further evaluation of Declan’s old injuries and other health issues, it was determined that no treatments could keep him pain-free or improve upon the already existing deterioration. He was humanely euthanized and runs free across the Rainbow Bridge.
