Adopt A Horse

Please note: visits must be scheduled in advance. Horses are kept at various locations and arrangements with caretakers’ schedules must be worked out. Thank you!
Horses available for adoption:

Front Range Equine Rescue (FRER) horses available for adoption range from companion horses to horses suitable for different levels of riding activity. Horses are available for immediate adoption unless otherwise noted. Click on a horse's name to review its case history.

More listings of FRER horses available for adoption:
Visit the "Lasting Partnership Training" website for more horses available for adoption - scroll to the bottom half of page.

Companion - cannot be ridden:

Light to medium riding – no jumping or other competitive activities:
  • Dante – 25 years “young” bay Paso Fino gelding, beautifully gaited, he needs a human with at least intermediate skills as he’s full of energy and go. He also needs special saddle padding for a sway back. He's sound and does well on senior feed and grass hay pellets.
  • Denny - older gelding ready to keep riding; rescued from kid's camp, about 14.2 hands, bay. Eats senior feed, soaked hay cubes and soaked beet pulp to maintain weight.
  • Stanley - 21 year old sorrel gelding, probably former ranch horse, trail riding. Has partial facial paralysis with some vision loss in right eye, gets around fine. About 14.1 hands; nice horse.
  • Rugar
  • Waschte
  • Missy
  • Choctaw
Riding with potential for limited competition:
  • Honey
  • Kitty
  • Dusty
  • Cody
  • Hunter
  • Mayzie
  • Phoenix - lovely buckskin filly, age 3, green, responds well to quiet/confident handling. Ground work including de-spooking done, now wearing tack. Experienced owner to bring her along.
  • Cassidy
These horses came to the rescue in March. They will have their medical needs met and then assessed for adoption. Available in 30-60 days.

Adoption Program:
The majority of horses rescued by FRER become available for adoption to permanent, loving, and suitable homes. If you are interested in adopting a horse, please read the following carefully.

To be eligible to adopt a horse you must meet the criteria listed below.

Additional requirements for out-of-state adopters:

If you don't meet the above criteria, please consider sponsoring a horse.

Rules of Adoption:

  • No breeding of adopted horses is allowed
  • No adopted horse can be sold, traded, leased, or given away. If an adoption does not work, the horse is either returned to FRER or the adoptive home is responsible for finding a suitable new home. FRER must be notified and approve of the new home before horse moves to a new home. The new home must also follow FRER's adoption guidelines.

Foster Homes:
Once rescued horses are rehabilitated and awaiting an adoptive home, FRER sometimes uses private foster homes to enable additional horses to enter the rescue at its main facility. Foster homes provide temporary care of horses until they are adopted. To be eligible for fostering you must meet these criteria:
  • Must be in or near the Black Forest area
  • Must have horse care experience
  • Must have at least one other horse on site
  • Must have appropriate shelter, turn out, and safe fencing
FRER makes arrangements with each foster home regarding feed, farrier, medical, and other expenses. Expenses incurred by the foster home are tax deductible.
Step-by-Step process to adopt:
  • Determine if you are eligible to be an adoptive home based on criteria above.
  • Review horses available for adoption
  • Complete the adoption forms and submit to FRER
  • With a FRER representative, visit the horse(s) you are interested in. Depending on suitability of horse and human match, additional visits may be necessary.
  • FRER approves or disapproves adoption
  • FRER makes a site visit to the adoptive home
  • New adoptive home takes their new equine friend home
  • Followup visits are scheduled on an as-needed basis
