To be eligible to adopt a horse you must meet the criteria listed below.
- FRER conducts pre-adoption site visits and reserves the right to lifelong follow up with each horse.
- Must have horse care experience or are willing to learn before the adoption takes place. Potential adopters with little or no horse experience are referred to educational clinics and/or local trainers to learn
basic horsemanship as applicable to the adoption. This instruction is at the adopter's expense.
- Must have at least one other horse on site.
- Must have appropriate shelter, turn out, and safe fencing available at your home or boarding facility.
- Must provide two references.
Additional requirements for out-of-state adopters:
- Must provided clear photos or video of adoptive home or boarding facility.
- Must have appropriate shelter, turn out, and safe fencing available at your home or boarding facility.
- Must have horse care experience or are willing to learn before the adoption takes place. Potential adopters with little or no horse experience are referred to educational clinics and/or trainers to learn. This instruction is at the adopter's expense. Preference will be given to those with natural horsemanship experience.
- Must have at least one other horse on site.
- Must provide a minimum of two references from professionals (vets, trainers, etc.) that are not related to you.
- Must provide transportation and cover all related costs.
If you don't meet the above criteria, please consider sponsoring a horse.
Rules of Adoption:
- No breeding of adopted horses is allowed
- No adopted horse can be sold, traded, leased, or given away. If an adoption does not work, the horse is either returned
to FRER or the adoptive home is responsible for finding a suitable new home. FRER must be notified and approve
of the new home before horse moves to a new home. The new home must also follow FRER's adoption guidelines.
